Pig Iron (Sponge Iron) is a metallic product made by the direct reduction of iron ore in the presence of carbon-based reducing agents, such as coke, charcoal or coal. The result is a spongy, porous mass of iron that is cooled and shaped into dense blocks or ingots. Pig Iron (Sponge Iron) has a high carbon content, typically ranging from 2.5% to 4.5%, which makes it a hard material. It is commonly used as a raw material in the production of steel, cast iron and wrought iron.
